Midwest Living Editor-in-Chief Dan Kaercher ate his way across 8,207 miles and the 12 Midwest states last summer to produce the upcoming Taste of the Midwest book and a public television series. In an excerpt from the book, Dan chronicles his lakeside meal at a vintage cabin resort northwest of Ely, Minn., which offers a first-rate meal alongside the most spectacular sunset over the island-dotted lake. Also in this issue, Dan’s Taste of Chicago picks – a tour of the city’s ethnic neighborhoods – including the perfect pizza pie, soul food from the southside and an exploration of Polish comfort food.
